Quilt-as-you-go (or QAYG) is an exciting quilting technique that helps you build a finished quilt in manageable steps. It’s great for beginners or those who are pressed for time. The process breaks the quilt into smaller, easily handled pieces like blocks, borders and sashing strips. You piece, quilt and join each piece of the quilt as you go. This allows you to finish your entire quilt without having to handle a large, bulky item. I Have put together some of my favorite QAYO video tutorials for you to watch below.
QAYG gives you the opportunity to take full advantage of intricate designs, add unique elements, and have total control over colour placement in the finished quilt. You can use QAYG to make small wall hangings, larger table runners, and full-sized bed quilts. When it comes to QAYG, the possibilities are endless! With a little creativity, you can create stunning quilts that will be treasured for years to come. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced quilter, QAYG is the perfect way to make beautiful quilts that you’ll be proud to show off.
To get started with QAYG, you’ll need to choose your fabrics and pick out a pattern. Pre-cut fabric kits are available if you want something simple and straightforward. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, try creating your own unique quilt design. Once you’ve got your fabric and pattern ready to go, it’s time to start piecing the blocks. To do this, sew each block together using a 1/4″ seam allowance. When all of the fabric pieces are sewn together, it’s time to quilt each block. You can do this either by hand or with a machine. If you’re using a machine, make sure to use the right type of thread and batting for the best results.
Once your blocks are finished, it’s time to assemble the quilt top. Line up the finished blocks in your desired pattern and use sashing strips to connect them. Sew the blocks together, using a 1/4″ seam allowance, to create your quilt top. Once the quilt top is ready, you can join the finished pieces using techniques like binding or stitch-in-the-ditch. When everything is sewn together, your quilt-as-you-go quilt is finished! Enjoy the satisfaction of having completed your own handmade piece.
Quilt-as-you-go is a great way to make quilts of all sizes as seen in the QAYO video tutorials below. With this technique, you can create intricate patterns, add personal touches, and have complete control over the colors of your quilt. Whether you’re just getting started with quilting or looking to try something new, QAYG is an empowering technique that will have you making beautiful quilts in no time. So why not give it a try?
